Experienced Attorneys Who Know Birth Injuries

During a baby’s delivery, many times doctors will use a vacuum-type device to assist in the birth process. This can pose a risk to the baby and sometimes infant hematoma is the result and can cause hemorrhaging. This type of birth injury can have lasting effects on the child’s life and may have been the result of improper protocol by doctors, nurses and other medical staff during delivery. If your doctor failed to see that infant hematoma occurred, Attorney Killino and his skillful and knowledgeable lawyers can help. They will take you through the legal process and counsel you on your rights and options as plaintiffs.

Infant Hematoma

Subdural infant hematoma affects different people in different ways. In fact, infants are more susceptible to subdural hematoma than toddlers and older children. That’s because the brain of infants has more room than the brain of older children to move around in the skull when shaken, hit or bruised.

Hematoma Causes

Infant Hematoma occurs when the baby’s head suffers a traumatic injury. It is caused by a collection of blood in the space between the outer layer and middle layers of the covering of the brain. It is most often caused by torn, bleeding veins on the inside of the dura as a result of a blow to the head. Delivery devices such as a vacuum extractor, both metal and plastic may also cause infant hematoma. Over the past few years, the Food and Drug Administration has received reports of 12 deaths and nine serious injuries among newborns on who vacuum assisted delivery devices were used. It is estimated that use of vacuum assisted delivery devices increased from 3.5 percent of all deliveries to 5.9 percent over the past four years.

Infant hematomas can also be caused by pressure built up during labor, and then a release of that pressure as the baby comes through the birth canal. The seriousness of an infant hematoma depends on the size. Smaller ones are not considered that serious and blood in the brain is generally absorbed during the weeks following birth. It is the larger hematomas that parents must be concerned about. If bleeding does not subside or if blood is not drained from the brain, death can occur.
